The metric that defines the programme
Ukraine's ground robot effort has one organising principle, and Brave1 CEO Andrii Hrytseniuk states it as a measurable goal rather than a slogan: ground robots should take the risk, not soldiers.
That sentence is the design brief for everything below. It is also why the programme is measured the way it is. The numbers Brave1 tracks are not units produced or contracts signed. They are missions run, kilometres driven, and soldiers evacuated, because those are the things that stand in for risk transferred away from people.
The numbers, and they are larger than most coverage suggests
Hrytseniuk gives figures precise enough to be checked later, which is rare and worth recording.
- The plan for this year is to contract more than 50,000 UGVs
- 22,000 were already contracted and funded at the time of the conversation, with a further significant volume being contracted
- In the first seven months of the year, UGVs ran more than 100,000 missions
- Missions and kilometres are growing 30% to 40% month on month
A hundred thousand logistics runs in seven months is not a pilot programme. That is a supply system. And a compounding monthly growth rate of a third means the figure at the end of the year bears no relation to the figure at the start.
Evacuation is tracked as its own metric, separately from logistics, because UGVs are widely used to bring wounded soldiers out. That is the clearest expression of the risk-transfer goal: the vehicle makes the trip through the kill zone instead of a stretcher party.
Four kinds of robot, and one that is genuinely strange
The category list is more varied than the popular image of a tracked supply cart.
Logistics UGVs carry ammunition, food and equipment forward. Evacuation UGVs bring casualties back. Kamikaze UGVs, single-use ground vehicles that drive into a target, are described as a growing trend.
The fourth category is the interesting one. Hybrid buggies that soldiers actually ride. A crew drives out to a position on the buggy, dismounts, and then a pilot in a shelter drives the empty vehicle back under remote control.
That solves a real and unglamorous problem. The dangerous part of vehicle movement near the front is frequently the return leg, when the vehicle is empty and the crew has nothing to gain from being aboard. Removing the humans from that leg costs nothing operationally and saves people.
Hrytseniuk adds that retrofitting remote control onto conventional weapons is a high priority in its own right. The pattern is consistent: the goal is not new machines, it is removing the person from the part of the task that kills them.
From a pony to a drone
The comparison Hrytseniuk uses to describe how fast this changed is the most vivid line in the section.
Two years ago, he says, a UGV was "like a pony or horse that follows the soldier." A thing that plodded along behind you.
Now they are managed the way UAVs are managed, with a different level of technology behind them and far more redundancy built in. Artificial intelligence is already being used in UGVs, not as a roadmap item but in fielded systems.
They have also stopped being purely transport. UGVs now serve as platforms for deploying other categories of weapon, which turns a logistics vehicle into a mount that can be sent somewhere a soldier should not go.
Why this matters beyond Ukraine
The strategic argument sits underneath the numbers and is easy to miss.
Ukraine is fighting an opponent with more people. Any exchange that trades Ukrainian lives for Russian ones at parity is a losing exchange regardless of tactical outcome. A machine that absorbs risk in place of a soldier is therefore not a convenience. It is a direct answer to the demographic arithmetic of the war.
Hrytseniuk's own framing elsewhere in the episode applies here: it is impossible to scale people. Turrets and ground robots are imperfect substitutes, but they are substitutes that can be manufactured.
That is why the metric is missions rather than machines. A UGV sitting in a depot has transferred no risk at all.
What to watch
- Whether the 50,000 contracting target is actually met, and whether funded converts to fielded. Hrytseniuk gave the figure openly, which makes it checkable.
- Whether the 30% to 40% monthly growth holds. Compounding at that rate is either transformative within a year or it flattens, and which one happens is the real signal.
- Evacuation missions specifically. Logistics numbers can be inflated by short, safe runs. Evacuation counts are harder to pad and map more directly onto lives.
